What is the Rocoto (Manzano) Chili Pepper with the Black Seeds?

The Rocoto chili pepper is among the oldest of domesticated chili peppers in the western hemisphere and was domesticated as early as 6,000 BC.  The Rocoto pepper grows at higher elevations in the Andes ranging from Colombia to Chile, as well as in the highlands of Central America and Mexico. It goes by many names including the Rocoto in Mexico, Caballo or “Horse” pepper in Guatemala. It is also known in Peru and in Mexico as the Manzano or Manzana pepper or “Apple pepper” in one variety resembling small red apples, or as Chili Perón or “Pear pepper,” in Mexico.The Rocoto is the only known chili pepper with black seeds.

Our premium non-GMO Rocoto chili pepper, also known as the Manzano or Manzana chile, has a medium heat level with a pleasing fruity and slightly sweet flavor notes. The scientific name for the Rocoto  pepper is Capsicum Pubescens. We have cultivated our Rocoto strain for over 20 years to produce the most stable heat level and the most flavorful Rocoto peppers in the world.

Appearance: On our farms, before processing, the Red Rocoto chili peppers are round, apple-shaped, and typically measure around 2-3 inches in diameter. They have thick, wrinkled skin and a glossy, vibrant red color when fully ripe. The flesh of the pepper is thick and crisp.

Flavor Profile: Our authentic Red Rocoto pepper powder is characterized as having a fruity and slightly sweet taste. While they have some heat, our Rocoto or Manzano chilies are not excessively fiery.
